For five consecutive years, Nissan North America has earned a notable title from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation as one of the Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality; to receive this honor, Nissan secured a 100% score, the first Tennessee-based company to do so, on the Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI).

The Corporate Equality Index (this year marks its 16th edition) has served as the “national benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices pertinent to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer employees.”

A total of 945 businesses that varied greatly in size, scope, and industry were evaluated by the HRC, which used four pillars to determine its CEI rating: “Non-discrimination policies across business entities; Internal education and accountability metrics to promote LGBTQ inclusion competency; Equitable benefits for LGBTQ workers and their families; and Public commitment to LGBTQ equality.”

The honor of Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality was earned by 609 businesses. These past five years have represented significant milestones for Nissan North America, including 2017’s fifth year as HRC’s Best Place to Work for LGBTQ equality.

According to Nissan, in 2016, the automaker updated its “equal employee opportunity statement to include not only sexual orientation, but also gender identity and expression.” In 2015, Nissan’s first LGBTQ-themed national advertising campaign was released. In 2014, Nissan amended its benefits plan to include help with coverage for medical costs related to gender reassignments. In 2013, the Gay-Straight Alliance group was created at Nissan.
