Nissan Frontier Production Will Stay In Mississippi
The next generation Nissan Frontier is finally coming, and while we don’t know what it looks like or what features it has, Nissan announced this month that it will definitely be built at its Canton, Mississippi, facility. This confirms that the Canton plant will be the home of Nissan’s truck manufacturing in North America for the foreseeable future.
When Nissan creates a new generation of its vehicles, it looks at expenses and facility features to determine which plant will make the new model. It does this to constantly stay on top of manufacturing efficiencies and costs. The lower these expenditures are, the more affordable (and competitive) the new vehicle can be. As of right now, the Canton plant builds the current Nissan Murano, Frontier, Titan, Titan XD, and the NV Cargo and NV Passenger vans. At peak capacity, it can churn out 450,000 vehicles a year. Over the past 14 years, the team in Mississippi has built three million cars.

Since moving to Mississippi in 2012, Nissan Frontier has been a leader in its class and received some of the highest honors in the industry for vehicle quality,” said Steve Marsh, vice president, Manufacturing, Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant. “The dedicated employees here in Canton look forward to building the next generation of one of the best pickup trucks in America.”
The plant in Canton has been great for the local economy, employing 6,400 people. Mississippi State University estimated in 2016 that the plant also generated about 25,000 jobs indirectly when it came to the state with jobs at suppliers and services that work with employees. It certainly won’t hurt Nissan’s image to keep building vehicles in the United States as it pushes to make its trucks more competitive.
