Nissan Intelligent Mobility Shows Off At UEFA Champions League
Nissan is all about being on the cutting edge of self-driving car technology, but the automaker also knows how to take a break and have fun. The most recent example of that is the Pitch-R, a little robot that utilizes the ProPILOT system, a component of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, to mark out a soccer field wherever there is space for one.

Nissan brought its latest toy to the UEFA Champions League Final Kyiv 2018, of which it is a sponsor. According to Nissan, the Pitch-R runs on a rechargeable battery and can analyze the area around it to find a space suitable to play soccer. It uses four cameras, GPS location tracking, and collision avoidance systems to draw white lines on whatever material is available for a soccer pitch, such as tarmac, grass, or gravel. The paint is dissolvable and won’t harm the environment, which makes creating a field for a spur-of-the-moment game guilt-free and tons of fun.
“The UEFA Champions League features the best footballers in the world,” said Roel De Vries, Nissan’s corporate vice president for marketing and brand strategy. “But all those star players started out like every kid – using jumpers for goalposts and chalk to mark lines wherever they could find open space to play the game they love.”

Nissan Europe’s vice president for marketing, Jean-Pierre Diernaz, added, “That’s the passion which drove our design and engineering team to create Pitch-R. It injects the best of Nissan technology into an innovation which can benefit grassroots football and excite and engage young fans.”
Of course, there is little to no chance that the Pitch-R will ever go on sale. It’s still fun to see the little bot at work while dreaming of a future of self-driving cars.
