Nissan is constantly working hard to make sure that it provides a fair and equal workplace to all of its employees, regardless of their race, gender, or sexual orientation. Last week , the Murfreesboro (Tennessee) Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) awarded Nissan North America with its “Organization of the Year” designation. This is the first year that the Murfreesboro Branch has decided to recognize a corporation, and Nissan is grateful that their work has been recognized.

The Nissan North America headquarters is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, about a 45 minute drive from Murfreesboro, and Nissan has an active presence in the city. Nissan volunteers worked on a Habitat for Humanity home in Murfreesboro this year, and recently committed itself to education for future manufacturing workers at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) campus at Murfreesboro. Outside of the immediate Murfreesboro area, Nissan has also invested more than one million dollars in Historically Black Colleges and Universities near its manufacturing plants.

For five years, Nissan has sponsored the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO), an achievement program that lasts a year and looks to encourage African American students to achieve more academically. Nissan has also supported the NAACP’s National Convention. Lastly, Nissan sponsored the wreath-laying ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery grave of Medgar Evers, a prominent civil rights activist, on the 50th anniversary of his death.

“It’s truly an honor to be recognized by such a prestigious organization for what Nissan does in the community and nationally,” said Jeffrey Webster, Nissan’s director of Diversity and Inclusion. “The NAACP’s mission to promote social and economic opportunities for ALL Americans is clearly aligned with Nissan’s goals of creating a truly diverse and inclusive workforce and fostering a greater appreciation and understanding of America’s diverse cultural heritage.”
