Nissan’s Decherd Powertrain Plant

Nissan is committed to building vehicles in the USA, with four plants building new cars in the state of Tennessee, in addition to the design center in California and the technical office in Michigan.  According to the automaker, a new engine is built at its Decherd Powertrain Plant every 19 seconds, and the hard work is paying off in big numbers. Today, production paused for a short while to celebrate the 10 millionth engine produced at the facility.

The lucky engine was built to power a Nissan Altima waiting to be assembled at the nearby Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant. This beast was a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine designed to achieve about 39 mpg on the highway. Last year alone, the facility built 964,000 engines and eMotors for the Nissan lineup. The 10 millionth engine is also the same heart in the Nissan Rogue crossover SUV. The VQ six-cylinder engine shares the plant, and it powers the Altima, Murano, Maxima, FrontierPathfinder, NV Cargo, and NV Passenger vans. Finally, the ZH eight-cylinder engine that drives the Nissan Titan and NV vans, as well as the engine for the Infiniti QX60, are both built in Tennessee.

This Tennessee facility employs more than 1,600 people, and it opened its doors in 1997. When it first opened, only 162,000 engines were built in its first year of operation. It just goes to show how much the brand has grown over the years.
