Nissan Recalls 990,000 Vehicles

The 2014 is among the vehicles recently recalled by Nissan.

Nissan and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just recently issued a recall for 989,701 vehicles here in the United States for an airbag malfunction issue. While General Motors has been hogging the spotlight these days with recalls, other automakers have clearly not been immune: Porsche, Volkswagen, Honda, Fiat, and others have all issued recalls in recent weeks while Toyota suffered negative press after its $1.2 billion payout to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Affected Nissan vehicles include the Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, and Sentra from 2013 – 2014. Also included in the recall are 2013 Infiniti JX35 models, as well as 2014 Q50 and QX60 models. (The JX35 is now branded as the QX60 because that name is somehow more indicative of luxury. I guess Qs are fancy?)

While nearly 990,000 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles are being recalled here in the United States, the Japanese automaker had to recall a total of 1,053,479 globally, according to Reuters.

While some might suspect that Nissan just felt left out of the recall party currently sweeping the automotive community, the vehicles are actually being recalled because of an issue with the occupant classification system. Reportedly, the system may incorrectly classify a seat as empty even when an adult is seated, inhibiting the activation of the airbags in the event of an accident.

Nissan will be reaching out to customers in April to have their software updated at a local dealership, free of charge.
