All right, so Nissan has released a ton of press releases on the redesigned Altima, so we will try to distill the news to a few points.

  1. The new Altima will go on sale in November
  2. It will have a starting MSRP of $22,500
  3. Its exterior and interior have been redesigned—for more details, check out our previous article
  4. Its steering and suspension have been retuned for enhanced ride comfort
  5. The automatic transmission has been enhanced by the Xtronic transmission’s D-step system, which adds gear shift levels to a normally shift-less transmission
  6. Altimas will be equipped with one of two engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (182 hp) or a 3.5-liter V6 (270 hp)
  7. Nissan has added the Altima SR to the lineup as a genuine sports model, bringing the total to seven (2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SR, 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL, 3.5 SR, and 3.5 SL)
  8. The 2.5-liter models (minus the SR) will have the best highway mpg in their class at 39 mpg
  9. Nissan added upgraded technology like Siri™ Eyes Free, NissanConnectSM with Mobile Apps, available NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps, and NissanConnect Services Powere by SiriusXM® telematics (subscription required)
  10. Nissan added new safety features, including Predictive Forward Collision Warning, radar-based Blind Spot Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Intelligent Cruise Control, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

These changes were announced in two separate locations on the same day: once in Detroit by Nissan’s executive vice president and North America chairman José Muñoz, and once in New York City by Nissan chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn.

This redesign is by no means intended to revamp sales of the Altima, as sales of Nissan’s sedan are quite thoroughly vamped all on their own.

“Altima has experienced five consecutive years of sales growth in the segment, a feat that no other mid-size car can claim,” said Muñoz (in Detroit). “And, Altima sales have grown more than 60 percent since 2009, the start of the economic recovery.”

After uttering a surprisingly similar phrase, Ghosn (in New York) added, “With this new, redesigned 2016 Altima, we expect to be more competitive in the marketplace.” He also mentioned that the Altima is the most sold Nissan car in the United States.

More information on the new Nissan Altima’s sports model will be coming soon.
