self-cleaning LEAFBack in April, we first learned about Nissan’s self-cleaning car prototype, which utilizes nano-paint technology to ward off dirt and water in order to keep the vehicle’s exterior spotless. With this week’s release of the 2015 LEAF, Nissan took the opportunity to remind us about this interesting technology as it so happens to adorn the world’s best-selling electric car in its North American iteraion. That’s right: there’s a self-cleaning LEAF, and it could spell the end of gas stations as we know it.

self-cleaning LEAF“The 100 percent electric LEAF provides the perfect canvas for this new, advanced paint technology,” said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. “This is one LEAF that never has to stop at gas stations – not even for a car wash.”

DID YOU HEAR THAT, GAS STATIONS? WE DON’T NEED YOU ANY MORE! (Okay, well, we might still need your beautiful convenience centers and your plentiful beef jerky, but, yeah, none of that other stuff that Pierre mentioned.)

The self-cleaning paint, called Ultra-Ever Dry®, will not be offered as standard equipment on the 2015 LEAF, but Nissan is said to be considering the self-cleaning nano-paint as a potential future aftermarket option. It’ll probably run somewhere north of eleventy billion dollars, but think of all the money you’d save over the lifespan of your vehicle in carwashes alone.

Nissan premiered the technology on a Nissan Note back in April, but the kinship with the LEAF’s innovative all-electric platform seems a much more natural fit

Now all there is to do is develop a technology that deflects empty fast food bags and Coke cans so that your floor always stays clean. Then we’ll truly have a self-cleaning LEAF. Get on it, Nissan.
