Nissan Uses 3D Objects to Inspire Vehicle Designers

To help the creative teams at Nissan stay focused on the core aesthetic behind their projects, designers often employ various three dimensional objects from which to draw inspiration.  These objects include a shark fin, windmills, motorcycle tank, and a bulldog wearing comically oversized sunglasses.

A Nissan 360 Video Report speaks with Francois Farion, senior manager, Nissan color and design strategy about the use of abstract objects in the effort of maintaining designer focus.  “Objects for us designers are very important. They allow us to communicate very well our design intention and to keep that intention all along the project.”

Farion added, “The objects – we have to look for them and find them everywhere. To work like this in 3-D, gathering objects and putting them together in a meaningful way, is really unique to Nissan as far as I know.”

The objects inspire various aspects of Nissan’s vehicles.  The shark fin was used to inform the sleek look of the 370Z, a levitating globe inspired the no gravity seats for the new Nissan Altima, and the shades-wearing pooch helped Nissan designers come up with the Cube’s unique profile.

Farion is participating in the Nissan 360 program for media in SoCal, where the primary foyer is adorned with many of these and other inspirational elements.  The event will run through September 15, which gives us just enough time to put in a word for using a “Macho Man” Randy Savage Wrestling Buddy for inspiration in future Nissan vehicles.  Ooooh yeeeah!
