Carlos GhosnThe US auto market has seen a period of record sales growth in recent years as drivers shake off the last dregs of the recession and replace their vehicles. While automakers and dealers alike are pleased with the trend, the leader of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Carlos Ghosn, is not as optimistic. This week he went on the record with CNBC to say that he foresees a stall in America’s auto market growth in the near future.

It’s A Long Story: Learn more about the history of Nissan

To clarify, Ghosn said clearly that he and his companies are preparing for a stable US market. When it comes to growing markets that he can focus on with the brands in the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Ghosn is predicting more growth in Mexico and Canada than here in the US. It should come as no surprise that the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s projections show that the fastest growth globally will come from China, especially in 2017. Currently Europe is the largest market for the alliance, which makes sense since it is one of its two home turfs (Renault is based in France, Nissan in Japan).

Some readers might be scoffing at this one businessman predicting the future of this country’s auto market, but they need to understand exactly who Carlos Ghosn is. This is the man that helped Renault grow into a major automaker. He then oversaw the creation of the Renault-Nissan Alliance and rescued Nissan from what many experts saw as certain doom. Many business insiders consider him one of the most effective company leaders in recent history. Hopefully other brands and car businesses hear his warnings and consider preparing for fewer records being broken.
