In the quest for an autonomous car, manufacturers have developed quite a few tools to keep passengers safe on the road before technology is ready to completely take the wheel. Many of these tools are so advanced that they are only offered on luxury vehicles or the upper trims of standard models. That is no longer true for Nissan, which has introduced a mid-year update for the Nissan Rogue, creating a 2017.5 model year. From now on, all Nissan Rogues will come standard with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alerts that are collectively part of Nissan’s Safety Shield Technologies.

The automatic braking system watches the road ahead of the Nissan Rogue to detect dangers or stopped traffic a driver may not notice. If the driver does not intervene to stop the car ahead of time or avoid the obstacle, the automatic emergency braking feature will apply the brakes to hopefully avoid a collision. When a collision is unavoidable, the car’s quick thinking will hopefully reduce the severity of the incident. Blind spot monitors will alert a driver if there is someone driving alongside the Nissan Rogue as they are trying to change lanes. When backing up, the rear cross-traffic alerts sound the alarm if a car is about to move behind the vehicle as it is trying to leave a driveway or parking space.

Besides standard safety features, the 2017.5 Nissan Rogue will also have the option of being equipped with Nissan’s popular Midnight Edition appearance package, which adds black aluminum-alloy wheels, black mirror guards, and other unique features in black.
