NY Auto Show News: Hyundai IONIQ Leaves the Prius in the Dust
Hyundai's extended-range hybrid proves the automaker knows more about EV technology than Toyota does
The 2017 Hyundai IONIQ, which made its first public appearance earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show, made its United States arrival today at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Today’s press conference was hosted by author and environmentalist David de Rothschild, who also lead the Geneva presentation. The event emphasized how the future of automobile technology is not as far away as we think.
In anticipation of today’s presentation, news broke this week that the Hyundai IONIQ will have a whopping 110-mile range on a single electric-only charge.
With some experts applauding Toyota for its focus on hybrid rather than EV technology, it’s exciting for Hyundai fans that the IONIQ will not only have a much longer range but much better fuel economy (56 mpg). Clearly, Hyundai has leapt past the Japanese automaker in the green driving realm.
News on Hyundai’s Revolutionary Electric Vehicle
Hyundai already made headlines with the IONIQ as it’s the first vehicle platform to come in three different forms: Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, and Electric. These three models are currently on display at New York’s annual auto show. The Korean brand plans for these cars to be affordable to those who wouldn’t normally buy an EV, thus appealing to a wide range of buyers. The IONIQ will use the same 28 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack currently found in the Kia Soul EV.
“IONIQ will attract an entirely new group of eco- and efficiency-oriented buyers in the US market,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of Corporate and Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “With outstanding powertrain flexibility, design, connectivity, and advanced technologies, Ioniq meets the needs of a large and growing group of buyers needing a highly efficient, low-emissions vehicle without compromise to their daily lifestyles.”
