One Look at DJ Mustard’s BMW i8 Will Make You Wish You Could Produce Hip-Hop Records
If you’ve listned to the radio at all in the past five years, then you probably heard music produced by DJ Mustard.
Mustard, real name Dijon McFarlane, is the man responsible for creating the beats used for the songs “No Mediocre” by T.I., “R.I.P.” by Young Jeezy, and “My Hitta” by YG, just to name a few of his many successful singles.
So what’s a 26-year-old producer to do with all that money which accompanies those hit songs? For Mustard, that meant traveling to Calabasas Luxury Motorcars to pick a new 2016 BMW i8.

For those who don’t know, the BMW i8 is a hybrid sports car that has the ability to run on purely electric energy. In the rear of the vehicle is a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and up front there’s a 96-kilowatt electric motor which receives its power from a lithium-ion battery pack. With those engines working in unison, the BMW i8 can rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and can hit a top speed of 155 mph.
The exterior of the BMW i8 is also eye-catching. Rather than featuring normal car doors, the i8 comes with “wing doors” that swing upward to allow the driver access in and out of the coupe. The i8 also comes standard with 20-inch alloy wheels and it’s the first car in the world to be sold with auto-dimming laser headlights.
Perhaps, best of all—at least for DJ Mustard’s sake—the BMW i8 comes standard with an 11-speaker, 360-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound system, which means he won’t necessarily have to splurge on new stereo equipment after spending six-figures on the new i8.
If you want to hear how Mustard made his money, go back and listen to a hit song he produced back in 2011 by the name of “Rack City,” or listen to Rihanna’s recent Billboard top-ten hit “Needed Me”; but, chances are, you won’t be listening to any of these tracks inside a hybrid BMW i8. This is because less than 10,000 examples of the i8 performance car are built each year.
