Opel this week announced that it will be supporting student racing teams from Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Ravensburg as part of its three-year sponsorship of the Formula Student educational competition. The addition brings the total number of German student teams supported by Opel to nine and the total number of international teams to 16.

The nine German teams will be participating in the Formula Student competition at the Hockenheimring from August 9th-14th. The competition puts teams in charge of a process chain comparable to that undertaken by automakers, including design and approval thereof to track testing to making a business case for everything from development and production to marketing and sale.

Opel Style Award

The winning team will be presented with the Opel Style Award, handed over to the most intuitive packaging and design solutions. The winning team will also earn a fully-equipped Opel Astra to use for a full season of Formula Student competition.

The teams added and the universities they represent are: Rennteam Stuttgart of Universität Stuttgart, KA-RaceIng of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, and Global Formula Racing – Germany of DHBW Ravensburg. They join six other German teams involved in Formula Student: TU DART Racing of TU Darmstadt, Scuderia Mensa of Hochschule Rhein-Main, HAWKS Racing of Hochschule Hamburg, Fast Forest of TH Deggendorf, KaRaT Racing of TU Kaiserslautern, and THM Motorsport of TH Mittelhessen Gießen.

International teams participating in Formula Student include six squads from the United States—representing University of Michigan, California State University, University of Washington, Michigan State University, Auburn University, and Oregon State University—and one Australian team representing Monash Motorsport Clayton.
