The Opel Ampera-e has not yet even arrived in Europe—the first batch should be delivered to customers in Norway in the spring—but it is already racking up the awards. The new Opel EV was awarded the “International Paul Pietsch Award 2017” for innovation in technology at auto motor und sport’s 41st annual Best Cars readers’ choice awards.

The Ampera-e won going away with 41% of the votes from a jury panel composed of 27 different editors-in-chief from auto motor und sport and its various and sundry partner pubs. The Ampera-e bested the next closest award nominee by more than 10 percentage points.

“The Ampera-e is the electric car for everyday use. Nobody has to worry about not being able to continue his or her journey due to a flat battery thanks to its range of over 500 kilometers. And, as the ‘Paul Pietsch Award’ demonstrates, the Ampera-e is not just visionary, it is also reality—it will be at dealerships this year already,” said Opel CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.

This marks the second consecutive year that Opel won the International Paul Pietsch Award for technological innovation; in 2016, Opel’s IntelliLux LED matrix lighting system was victorious.

The Opel Ampera-e boasts an electric range of more than 500 kilometers per the NEDC test cycle and 380 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle. It will only require 30 minutes at a 50 kW DC fast-charger to add 150 kilometers of additional range, and the electric powertrain delivers an electronically-limited top speed of 150 km/h.

Prior to being put up for sale in Norway, the Ampera-e won the ECOBEST 2016 award at the 2016 AUTOBEST Awards.
