Opel announced that it will award a special prize—co-created with the Internationale Münchner Filmwoche GmbH—to the winner of a short film contest taking place at this year’s Munich Film Festival.

The newly-announced Sophie Opel Prize will be awarded to the winner of a call to filmmakers at universities across Germany to produce “unconventional, innovative commercial spots or short films” consistent with Opel’s popular advertising motto, “Umparken im Kopf,” or “Change Your Mind.” The prize is so named for the wife of company founder Adam Opel.

“‘Umparken im Kopf’ was the most successful brand campaign in recent years. We are eager to see how young, creative film makers and students give the idea of changing people’s opinions a new twist,” says Tina Müller, Opel’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Müller will be one of the judges for the competition, joining commercial film director Professor Christian Köster, TV Spielfilm editor Lutz Carstens, actor/director Ken Duken, and Filmfest München head Diana Iljine. The panel will judge entries based on the quality of innovativeness, with the top three entries earning their part of a combined €20,000 purse—€12,000 for the grand prize, €5,000 for first runner-up, and €3,000 for the second-place runner-up.

“Together with our partner Opel, we are delighted to present the ‘Sophie Opel Prize’ for the first time this year,” said Iljine. “It gives young film makers the opportunity to display their abilities in front of a highly qualified audience during the Munich Film Festival.”

The deadline for entries is May 27th, and the finalists will be honored during the festival on June 30th.
