The Opel Astra has done seemingly nothing but win awards since its arrival on the market, and it now has two new trophies to add to its expansive case. The Opel Astra 1.6 CDTI won the Green Mobility Trophy 2017 and the title of “Best Economical Diesel” this month from the readers of Auto Zeitung. Of the 7,400 votes cast, the Astra received 28.1% to take the top spot, blasting past the BMW 520d and Mercedes-Benz E 220d.

Opel’s newest, greenest addition to the lineup—the Opel Ampera-e—was also a hit with readers, taking the silver medal in the category of “Best Electric Vehicle.” The Ampera-e’s 520-kilometer all-electric range puts in in a league all its own. Introduced to the European market earlier this year, the Ampera-e has already become a popular choice among green drivers, with everyone up to and including The Pope taking an interest in its emissions-free driving capabilities.

“We are delighted with these knowledgeable readers’ verdict. With this, our Astra wins another major award after it already captured the European “Car of the Year 2016” as well as 13 national ‘Car of the Year’ titles,” says Jürgen Keller, Opel Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Germany.

Most recently, the Opel Astra was named the Wesbank South African Guild of Motoring Journalists’ 2017 Car of the Year. The Ampera-e has also won a number of awards already, including the ECOBEST 2016 award in the 2016 AUTOBEST Awards and the International Paul Pietsch Award 2017.
