The new Opel Astra is very, very neat. It’s so neat that one can’t help but think that GM would make a killing if it ported its little hatchback to the US and put a tri-shield on it (and they very well may be considering it). As if there wasn’t already enough evidence that the Astra would be a hit with US buyers, and that it’s going to wind up being a massive hit with European shoppers, the Astra is being touted as having best-in-class total cost of ownership among entry level compact cars.

This is achieved with the longest service intervals in the segment (30,000 kilometers/18,641 miles), 10.9% higher retained value than even its predecessor, a price point that is around €5,000/$5,685 USD cheaper than its competitors, and an efficient diesel engine.

“The new Astra was created from the proverbial white sheet of paper. That shines through in every details. Quality, design and economic efficiency are at a very high level, ultra-modern engines, and quality workmanship also speak for our bestseller. With these attributes the Astra is setting standards in its class and should be even more popular with customers and, especially, fleet managers,” said Jürgen Keller, Executive Director Sales, Marketing & Aftersales Germany.

The Opel Astra is the Buick that America deserves.
