The Opel Astra continues to pick up awards for excellence at a seemingly near-continuous clip, adding a pair of trophies from Independent Motoring in its annual Best of the Best awards.

The new Astra was named both the Best Family Car and the Overall Best of the Best in the seventh annual Best of the Best awards held in Johannesburg this week. The awards are determined by a panel of automotive journalists from publications including The Star, Pretoria News, The Mercury, and motoring.co.za. Judges analyzed the merits of more than 60 new vehicles that were released in South Africa over the past 12 months before ultimately determining the Astra to be the best of the bunch.

“Opel has upped its game with a car that’s lighter yet roomier, more interesting to look at, classier inside and packed with new-age gadgets,” said Independent Media’s Motoring Editor Denis Droppa. “In standing out against a market of over achievers, the new Astra has done it by ditching some mass in its midriff and gaining some in its cranium.”

Points of praise for the new Astra included its value for the money, including the use of high-end driver assist technologies that would otherwise be standout features on luxury vehicles, as well as its improved style and performance.

In addition to the two latest awards from Independent Motoring, the Opel Astra was named the European Car of the Year earlier in 2016 and is in the running for the Wesbank South African Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Car of the Year.
