Opel, you may or may not be aware, is also a manufacturer of engines for boats. This month, the automaker announced that its 2.0-liter diesel engine has been adapted by Cimco Marine AB for use as an outboard engine on high-performance boats.

Taking the name OXE—the Swedish word for ox—the four-cylinder engine provides 200 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque for those looking for the utmost power on the water. According to Opel, the engine only requires service every 200 hours and overhauled every 2,000, making it considerably more time-efficient than other outboard engines. What’s more, it also requires about 42% less fuel than other two-stroke outboard engines, and it operates much more quietly for those who intend to use it for the purposes of fishing.

For use on more turbulent waters, the engine has been upfitted with a dry-sump system and a belt propulser unit, as well as closed-circuit coolant system that makes the OXE particularly useful in icy waters.

“By selling components we are tapping into small but important market segments in which our products are very popular. The OXE Diesel is the perfect example. We are playing an important part in the capacity utilization of our engine production in Kaiserslautern by providing Cimco Marine AB with this engine,” said Alex Thielemans, Manager Components Sales, Opel.

On land, the 2.0-liter diesel is used in the Vauxhall Cascada, Insignia, and Zafira. It is manufactured in Germany at Opel’s Kaiserslautern plant.

“Adapting our engine to the very different environment was a significant challenge,” said Massimo Giraud, Assistant Chief Engineer at Opel’s diesel development center in Turin. “We had to change the engine’s character by completely retuning the calibration. For the marine application, we abandoned the high low-end torque the engine is famous for and aimed for the high power output necessary for cruising speed. Mission accomplished!”
