The 2018 Buick Regal is expected to closely resemble the Opel Insignia Grand Sport

Of the questions raised in the sale of Opel/Vauxhall to PSA Group last month was that of how it would affect the production of Buick vehicles. This week, it was revealed that Opel is committing to building Buick-badged vehicles at its factories beyond 2019, the point at which Opel will begin manufacturing new vehicles on PSA platforms.

In a statement released Thursday that confirms product agreements for Opel’s Rüsselsheim and Eisenach plants—respectively, a successor to the Mokka X crossover to be built beginning in 2019 and a new large SUV that will be built from 2020—Opel writes that “investments are also confirmed for exports of sister products for another GM brand from these plants.”

Automotive News got additional clarification on this from an Opel spokesperson, who confirmed that this refers to Buick vehicles. The 2018 Buick Regal, which was revealed on Tuesday at a special event, will be built at Rüsselsheim, where the Opel Insignia upon which the Regal is based is also built.

Additionally, Opel revealed on Thursday that it will undertake legal steps to fulfill the “ultimate goal” of grouping together Opel’s European businesses into one company before integrating into PSA.

As such, Adam Opel AG will be converted into a GmbH, and Opel Group GmbH will then be merged into Adam Opel GmbH prior to merging into PSA Group. The merger will not be complete until it has passed “various regulatory approvals, including the clearance by the European Commission.”
