The Opel Grandland X, though it has already been unveiled and is available to pre-order right now, will make its grand debut in Frankfurt next month and quickly begin appearing at dealerships across Europe. As the walkup to that glorious premiere and official start of deliveries gets underway, Opel is outlining the various features and functions that should appeal to drivers. Among these is Driver Drowsiness Alert, a new feature that aims to curb driver fatigue and keep roads even safer.

“Driver fatigue is a danger for all road users, not just for drivers themselves,” said Opel Managing Director Sales and Aftersales Peter Küspert. “The Driver Drowsiness Alert system in the Opel Grandland X can detect typical signs of fatigue and remind drivers to take regular breaks during long journeys, before something worse happens.”

Driver Drowsiness Alert does very much what it sounds like: if a vehicle’s course seems to indicate that the driver is fatigued, a signal will sound and a message will display on the instrument cluster. Three warnings will be issued before a second alert is displayed on the cluster and a louder signal sounds.

Opel included this feature with an ADAC study in mind that revealed drivers who fall asleep at the wheel as being responsible for around 25% of all fatal collisions that occur in Germany.

The Grandland X features a number of other safety technologies including Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking and pedestrian detection, Automatic Cruise Control with stop function, and Advanced Park Assist. Opel OnStar also provides emergency response services in addition to the ability to locate places for drivers to stop and take a rest when necessary.
