Opel Ko-HAF Explores Issues Facing Automated Driving
Every automaker is exploring the feasibility and applications of automated driving, and Opel is no exception. With its Ko-HAF—short for Kooperatives hochautomatisiertes Fahren—Opel is exploring issues including having up-to-date and fully detailed road maps and returning the vehicle to manual driver control in proper time.
Ko-HAF has resulted in something known as a Safety Server, a solution that allows cars to gather pertinent road-mapping information and communicate it back to the server. The Safety Server then uses this information to create a completely accurate digital road map.
Ko-HAF is also working on ways to exploit the correlation between driving situations and the actions of drivers inside the car. It’s said that Opel is working on a system of sensors and software that will help categorize driver action and response.
The Ko-HAF began on June 2015 and will conclude in November 2018. It has a running budget of 36.3 million euros.
