Opel kicked off 2016 with an approximate total of 80,000 new vehicle registrations across Europe, good for the brand’s best January sales figure and market share since 2011. Sales were up by around 7,500 units, or 10.4% year-over-year, while Opel’s market share was up 0.4 percentage points to 5.75%.

Opel anticipates that its hot start will be the pace for the remainder of the year, thanks to the addition of new vehicles to the lineup over the next 11 months. Overall, Opel sales were up in 14 European markets, including an eight-year high mark in Germany and Spain.

“Our excellent start to the year once again shows that our product offensive is appealing to the taste of our customers,” said Peter Christian Küspert, Vice President, Sales & Aftersales, Opel Group. “The new Astra is a resounding success with an increase of over 43 percent in January. The new Astra Sports Tourer and the new Mokka X will continue to drive sales during the course of the year.”

While Opel offered few specifics about specific models in January, it was noted that the Astra has been carrying the lion’s share at a total of 17,500 units for the month. This brings the Astra’s cumulative sales total since launching across Europe in November to 100,000 units.

Additionally, the Mokka was up 5.4% at a total of 12,500 units sold. In January, sales of the Mokka across Europe surpassed 500,000 units.
