General Motors Canada will be running Saturday overtime shifts at the Consolidated Line at its Oshawa Assembly Plant through the end of 2015 to accommodate for increased demand for the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. Significant interest in the SUV/crossover segment has made the Equinox one of GM’s hot ticket items in Canada, making the move necessary in order for the automaker to keep pace.

“The compact SUV market has been an important driver in the overall performance of the Canadian auto industry and we are responding with the increased volume production for the Chevrolet Equinox,” said Steve Carlisle, president and managing director, GM Canada. “This is positive news for our community and helps us deliver great products for our customers.”

The Equinox is one of two products built on Oshawa’s Consolidated Line, alongside the previous-gen Chevy Impala. Production on the Consolidated Line has been extended through 2017. The Oshawa Assembly Plant’s Flex Line produces the Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, current-gen Impala, and Camaro. Production of the latter will end at Oshawa by month’s end, and the Flex Line’s third shift will be terminated by the end of 2015.
