2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

The Green Car Journal announced the finalists for its prestigious Green Car Awards, which go out each year to winners at the LA Auto Show.  The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one of the finalists for the 2019 Green SUV award.

Winners of these awards are those vehicles that demonstrate leadership in the automotive industry, raising the bar in environmental performance while still being affordable for most consumers. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV certainly meets these qualifications.

Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid crossover is one of only a few available on the market. When we tried to make a list of plug-in crossovers back in February, it only had one direct competitor in the Kia Niro Plug-in (other competitors were either priced way above the Outlander PHEV or much smaller fully-electric compact/subcompact crossovers).

Unfortunately, the Outlander PHEV will just go to judging as the 2018 model year. This is unfortunate as Mitsubishi announced a number of upgrades for 2019. For this model year, Mitsubishi said that the Outlander PHEV’s battery capacity would increase by 10 percent. The 2018 model had 22 miles of electric range, but for 2019 it can go up to 28 miles without burning gas. It also will sport a new, higher electric top speed and 10 percent stronger electric motor output.

The Outlander PHEV is competing against the Cadillac XT4, Hyundai Kona, Lexus UX, and Volvo XC40. Green Car Journal will announce winners at the LA Auto Show’s AutoMobility LA event.
