Pastafarian’s License Won’t Be Renewed Until He Removes Colander from Head

In what is perhaps the most unexpected battle of religious tolerance ever recorded, a Pastafarian’s license will not be renewed in Surrey, British Columbia , because he refuses to remove a colander from his head for the photo.

For those new to Pastafarianism, the religion of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the satirical movement came about in 2005 when the Kansas School Board voted to teach creationism in science class. This, reasonably so, angered evolutionists everywhere, so much so that Bobby Henderson, who was 25 at the time and studying physics, wrote a letter to the state, urging them to also teach the theory of “Flying Spaghetti Monsterism.”

It evolved into something much bigger, with people of all religions and sometimes no religion claiming “faith” in the Flying Spaghetti Monster in an effort to combat the ridiculous things religious extremists were and are doing in the name of religion. Obi Canuel (no relation to the Kenobis) is one of those people.

Obi Canuel refuses to remove his colander for his photo.

Last November, Canuel took a picture for his license wearing a blue toga, and, of course, the necessary head garb, a plastic spaghetti colander. Remarkably, the photo went through for his provincial ID, but later, the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) rejected the license. Since then, Canuel has been driving using temporary paper licenses, which he has renewed over and over again, but now, he has been told he will not be issued any more until he takes his photo sans colander.

A spokesperson for the ICBC reportedly said that the organization will always accommodate for customers whose religions prohibit the removal of head coverings, but that Canuel has yet to prove that the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster prohibits this.

“I want everyone to understand that they have a right to religious expression,” Canuel told National Post with a straight face while sporting his holy colander.

Whether this Pastafarian’s license will be renewed remains to be seen, but in the meantime, let’s all just enjoy some Spaghettios or something.

Amen.
