If you’re growing tired of “Deflategate,” but still want a topical justification for hating the New England Patriots, you may be in luck!

According to Boston.com, Massachusetts State Troopers are currently investigating the possibility that Pats linebacker Brandon Spikes was involved in a hit-and-run accident.

Apparently, at 3:30am on Sunday morning, Spikes’ 2011 Mercedes Maybach was found badly damaged and abandoned in the median of a Foxborough interstate. An OnStar representative told troopers that the car’s driver had reported hitting a deer … except there wasn’t any deer to be found, or any driver, for that matter.

Shortly thereafter, troopers responded to a report that a 2009 Nissan Murano carrying a 51-year-old man, 32-year-old woman, and 12-year-old boy, had been rear-ended in the same area. The Murano’s three passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

So at this point it’s all just speculation, but it certainly isn’t looking good for Spikes. It doesn’t take a huge leap of the imagination to suspect that the two incidents are connected, or to suspect that a man who abandons his car on the interstate might not have done so while sober.

“In 21 years as a road trooper, experience tells me that there will at least be a charge of leaving the scene of a property-damage accident,” State Trooper Matthew Guarino told Boston.com.

Police are still investigating the incident and no charges have been made, but it sounds like the Patriots may have already come to their own conclusions about the matter:

Malcolm Butler, please drive your free truck very cautiously. We don’t think Robert Kraft’s blood pressure can handle anymore bad PR.
