2018 Ford Expedition FX4 Off-Road Package

Ford reports that one out of five Expedition owners intend to use their SUVs to go off road at some point, which is why it has revealed that the upcoming 2018 model will be offered with a new package that will make it all the more capable of handling roads less traveled.

The 2018 Ford Expedition FX4 Off-Road Package takes full advantage of the new Expedition’s capabilities—particularly its Terrain Management System and new powertrain combination of the all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, which in turn provides a best-in-class max towing rating of 9,3000 pounds—by adding features specifically catered toward improving off-road performance.

These include an electronic limited-slip rear differential with 3.73:1 gearing for more traction, retuned shocks to improve road contact, all-terrain tires covering 18-inch Magnetic Metallic-painted cast-aluminum wheels, and seven different skid plates to protect powertrain components from the elements—including a sand shield that prevent turbocharger clogs when driving on the dunes. For additional distinction from other Expedition trims, the FX4 Off-Road Package also includes chrome running boards, FX4 badging on both the liftgate and front fender, and rubber floor liners to help keep the interior clean on adventurous outings.

“The FX4 Off-Road package delivers off-road driving confidence,” said Mike Kipley, Expedition vehicle engineering manager. “The technology we’re using works to adapt to different driving conditions so customers can enjoy the adventure without worry.”

The new Expedition utilizes a high-strength steel frame and aluminum-alloy body panels to cut up to 300 pounds over the previous generation, all while adding new technologies—including a smart television rear seat entertainment system that includes SlingPlayer functionality—that make it the most intelligent iteration in its history.
