GMC got a leg upon its competitors in terms of garnering buzz at the 2017 North American International Auto Show by revealing the all-new 2018 GMC Terrain on Sunday evening. The Terrain, which shares a platform with the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, looks decidedly unlike its bowtie-wearing cousin with a bolder and more bubbly exterior.

“GMC’s strong growth over the past decade is due in large part to Terrain,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of global GMC Sales and Marketing. “The all-new Terrain builds on that success, leveraging GMC’s proven premium SUV experience to shake up the largest vehicle segment, with a strong blend of design, functionality and engineering excellence.”

“It is a striking design with functional beauty,” said Helen Emsley, executive director, Global GMC Design. “There’s confidence and optimism in its stance, with exceptional attention to detail that speaks to GMC’s rise as a premium brand.”

As could be anticipated based on the engine options available for the Equinox, the 2018 GMC Terrain will be available with three turbocharged engines, including a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel. The Terrain shares the same 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines as the Equinox, providing what is certain to be a superb mix of power and efficiency. Output and efficiency will be revealed at a later date.

Terrain will come standard with Traction Select, which optimizes throttle response and other facets of the drive at the behest of the driver. AWD models will be offered with a FWD mode for optimal fuel efficiency.

For those interested in even more upscale SUVs, the new Terrain Denali will receive a number of signature aesthetic touches including a chrome grille, body-color fascia and lower trim, LED headlamps, and 19-inch ultra-bright machined aluminum wheels. On the inside, it will receive a unique trim tint color, logos and piping, heated steering wheel, navigation, Bose seven-speaker sound system, and a hands-free programmable liftgate.

As one of GMC’s teaser images suggested, the 2018 Terrain will feature an expanded center consule with underneath pass-through storage, ideal for stowing tablets or bags. Other convenience features include fold-flat front passenger seat, flat-folding rear seats, under-floor cargo storage compartments, standard seven-inch and available eight-inch-diagonal infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility and standard OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

GMC also expands the Terrain’s safety offerings with technologies including Surround Vision, Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator, Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. The Terrain will also be the latest GMC vehicle to receive Rear Seat Reminder and Teen Driver technology.

The 2018 GMC Terrain is set to hit dealers this summer and will be available in SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali trims.
