[Photos] 2018 Lincoln Navigator: More Luxury, More Tech, More Style, Still a Loveable Boat

This is likely to come as a disappointment to most of you, but here’s the straight story: the 2018 Lincoln Navigator is not being sold with enormous gullwing doors. If this is a dealbreaker you simply cannot abide, we all understand if you don’t wish to read on.

Revealed today at the New York International Auto Show (after a rather appropriate private debut in the Hamptons), the 2018 Lincoln Navigator is a surprisingly smooth looking upgrade for the enormous, boxy land boat. Bearing the new face of the brand, replete with a well-appointed interior, and outfitted with cutting-edge technologies, the new Navigator is likely to help Lincoln maintain its sales momentum and its ongoing push to redefine the brand’s ethos.

“Quiet luxury is both a look and a feeling,” says Kumar Galhotra, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “The all-new Navigator embodies both. The sleek styling, spacious interior and technology are all designed to make each trip effortless.”

Gullwing doors aside, the new 2018 Navigator looks quite a bit similar to the Navigator Concept that bowed in New York last year. Following in the footsteps of the 2018 Ford Expedition, the Navigator employs high-strength aluminum-alloy body components to help cut around 200 pounds from the current-gen Navigator.

Adding to the Navigator’s exterior style is the same Approach Detection technology showcased on the 2017 Continental; upon approach, the Lincoln star logo in the Navigator’s honeycomb grille lights softly, followed by the LED lighting in front and rear, before a Lincoln star puddle light appears beneath both front doors to offer a welcome. Based on photographs, the 2018 Navigator is also offered with lighted door handles and, rather than the odd-looking three-tiered concertina steps of the Navigator Concept, a single step to help give driver and passenger a boost up into their boat.

On the inside, the Navigator gets sequential ambient lighting for all three rows to illuminate the interior at night and a panoramic moonroof to let light in during the day or when the moon is bright. Laminated front and side glass helps insulate the Navigator against exterior noises, making it all the easier to enjoy the available 20-speaker Revel® Ultima audio system and rear-seat entertainment system.

In terms of interior comfort, the Navigator gets 30-way-adjustable Perfect Position Seats with massage, heating, and cooling functions. Second-row passengers get audio and climate controls via the center console, and third-row passengers have power recline functionality. Consistent with the idea of the utmost comfort is Lincoln’s Personal Profile, which utilizes the key fob to recall preferred settings for everything from seating and climate to pedal positon and entertainment.

For even further interior luxury, the Navigator will be offered with three Black Label themes: Yacht Club, the signature theme which combines Coastal Blue Venetian and Blue Bay Alpine leather with whitewashed teak appliques; Chalet, which combines Espresso and Alpine Venetian leather with Sliverwood appliques to evoke the feeling of being on a ski trip; and Destination, which uses Mahogany Red Venetian leather and khaya wood appliques to hearken to vintage luggage.

The Navigator will be the second Ford vehicle following the Expedition to offer SlingPlayer via in-vehicle Wi-Fi, which is standard for the Navigator and allows for up to 10 devices to be connected at once. The available rear-seat entertainment system will allow for live television to be streamed to its 10-inch adjustable screens via Slingbox in addition to media accessed via USB, HDMI, or SD Card.

The 2018 Lincoln Navigator also comes replete with the latest in performance, entertainment, and comfort technology. This includes a configurable 12-inch instrument cluster, available Head-Up Display, Trailer Backup Assist, SYNC 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available wireless phone charger, 360-degree camera and enhanced park assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Performance-wise, the 2018 Navigator is offered with a twin-turbo V6 that Lincoln expects to produce 450 horsepower. It will be offered with seven different drive modes, all catered to specific driving conditions: Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery, Deep Conditions, Slow Climb, and Deep Sand.
