2018 Mazda6 redesigned

As Mazda promised two weeks ago, the Zoom Zoom brand has brought us a newly refreshed flagship sedan at the LA Auto Show—the 2018 Mazda6.

Of course, Mazda has another redesigned, highly refined flagship in the CX-9, which has one unique thing that the rest of the lineup doesn’t have—the Signature trim. That is, unique until now, as Mazda has given the Mazda6 its own Signature trim.

The Mazda6 Signature receives a number of its own updates, including brown Nappa leather, UltraSuede® NU, and Sen wood trim elements. However, the top upgrade for the Signature trim is what Mazda somewhat coyly referred to as its “source of motivation” in a press release: a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, the same used in the current CX-9 crossover. This motor uses a Dynamic Pressure Turbo, which quickly spools up its turbocharger at low rpms, creating an engine with torque on par with a 4.0-liter V8 engine.

The new Mazda6’s design is based on that shown on the VISION COUPE concept which the automaker revealed at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, known as “Mature Elegance.” On the outside, the front features a new grille with a strong silver wing and slimmer headlights, while the rest of the sedan features extended painted surfaces, new 17- and 19-inch wheel designs, and the new Soul Red Crystal paint.

The interior of the Mazda6 is new as well, with only the wheel and some trim pieces carrying over from the previous model. Now, the flagship sedan features a horizontally-stretched dashboard, accentuating the interior space, and some redesigned, wider seats made of next-generation materials to keep the front passengers’ spines in a natural S shape.

The new Mazda6 also gets some new technology, including available ventilated front seats, a 360-degree View Monitor, a reconfigurable 7-inch gauge display for higher-trim models, an 8-inch MAZDA CONNECT infotainment display, available full-speed Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, an windshield wiper de-icer, and a windshield-projected Active Driving Display head-up unit.

Going back to the power for a moment, the Mazda6’s normal naturally-aspirated engine gets some upgrades to reduce internal friction, as well as new, unique cylinder deactivation technology.

The new, redesigned Mazda6 is expected to go on sale in spring of 2018.
