The 2019 Ram 1500 receives several updates that improve its power, technology, and efficiency compared to previous generations

Ram is hoping to lead the charge into a new age of pickup trucks

This year’s North American International Auto Show places a major emphasis on the pickup truck segment, which is expected to grow even more popular than it already is during 2018. So it should come as no surprise that some of the show’s biggest vehicle reveals belong to this particular segment.

Among those reveals is the long-awaited and highly-anticipated 2019 Ram 1500.

The battle for pickup truck supremacy has never been more heated. The 2019 iteration of the Ram 1500 includes a number of improvements to help increase the model’s chances of coming out on top.

First and foremost, the new Ram 1500 manages to shed 225 pounds compared to its previous generation. At the same time, the new frame for the model features 98% high-strength steel to improve durability.

At the front of the model, a new grille greets passengers as they approach. While the rumored split-tailgate seems to be absent, the tailgate has been improved with aluminum materials and electronic mechanisms.

Touchscreen and button fans can both rejoice with Ram’s new interface

Inside, drivers will discover a massive 12-inch touch screen for interacting with FCA’s Uconnect system. For drivers who are a little more averse to touchscreen interfaces, the 2019 Ram 1500 also includes classic analog dials and buttons.

Technology updates can also be observed with the 2019 Ram 1500’s safety systems. The new Ram 1500 features such safety technologies as Adaptive Cruise Control, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Warning.

The majority of these improvements will be standard across the Ram lineup

While all of these updates are quite impressive, perhaps the exciting addition to the 2019 Ram 1500 is its new powertrain: the eTorque mild hybrid system. This powertrain will not only make the Ram 1500 more powerful, but more efficient to boot.

Utilizing the eTorque mild hybrid system, the Ram 1500 achieves a maximum payload of 2,300 pounds and maximum trailer tow of 12,750 pounds. The eTorque system also adds 90 lb-ft of torque to the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and 130 lb-ft of torque to the available 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine.

Aerodynamics are another way FCA is making the Ram 1500 more efficient

Since the eTorque powertrian is a mild hybrid system, it is set to improve the vehicle’s fuel efficiency rating. While no concrete numbers have been published by FCA yet, rumors suggest that the Ram 1500’s fuel economy could be increased to a combined score of 22 MPG.

Also aiding in the improvement of the Ram 1500’s fuel economy are alterations to the vehicle’s air suspension systems. Next generation air suspension enhancements, along with grille shutters, improve the pickup’s aerodynamics.

FCA hasn’t indicated an exact release date for the 2019 Ram 1500. Still, drivers can learn all about the model by visiting a special website that Ram assembled for the new pickup, found here.
