Ford today confirmed what has been widely suspected since late last year: the Ford GT supercar, which uses carbon fiber in its body, will be offered with carbon-fiber wheels. This was more or less confirmed last month when two carbon-fiber wheel options were revealed in the Ford GT configurator.

Ford last year became the first automaker to offer mass-produced carbon fiber wheels for one of its vehicles, making black-painted carbon fiber wheels standard equipment for the 2015 Shelby GT350R Mustang. The 2017 Ford GT will be offered with carbon fiber wheels in either matte or glossy clearcoat finishes.

“Ford was the innovator as the first to offer a mass-produced carbon fiber wheels as a standard offering on Shelby GT350R Mustang,” said Dave Pericak, Ford Performance global director. “Now, Ford GT will offer the next generation in carbon fiber wheels, with an advanced resin and fiber technology that gives our designers more freedom, while also showcasing the structure of the material’s weave.”

The Ford GT, for which the automaker received more than 6,500 applications in a one-month period, will come standard with 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels, measuring 8.5 x 20 inches in the front and 11.5 x 20 inches in the rear. The carbon fiber wheels will have the same measurements, but they will be stiffer and about two pounds lighter per wheel, enabling a 25% decrease in inertia and an improvement in both traction and driver control.

Supplier Carbon Revolution is responsible for the Ford GT’s carbon fiber wheels. The Ford GT itself is built in Ontario by Multimatic Inc.
