Raise your hand if, had you been asked which vehicle you figured was next in line to get an ST trim from Ford Performance, you would have answered the Edge mid-size SUV. Anyone? No, Ted. Stop lying.

Whether you would have predicted it or not, the maniacs at Ford are making it happen, announcing that the revamped 2019 Ford Edge will offer an Edge ST model that should be shooting right to the top of many an SUV enthusiast’s “must-have” lists.

The 2018 Ford Edge ST will offer the most powerful V6 engine option in its class, powered by the 2.7-liter EcoBoost and tuned to deliver a whopping 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, as well as numerous other performance-minded features. While Ford has not confirmed trim options for the 2019 Ford Edge outside of the Titanium and ST, it’s a fair bet that the Edge ST is replacing the Edge Sport, formerly the namebadge’s highest-output offering.

“Edge ST puts a new animal on the road—a performance SUV with a track mentality,” said Hau Thai-Tang, executive vice president of Product Development and Purchasing. “From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive.”

The Edge ST will be aesthetically discernable from the 2019 Edge ST thanks to revised front and rear styling—including the signature Ford ST honeycomb mesh grille, which is ideal for engine cooling—deep side skirts, dual-exhaust outlets, distinctive 21-inch wheels, and unique interior design elements.

More important are the differentiations in terms of performance. The 2019 Ford Edge ST’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with a new Sport Mode, and steering wheel-mounted SelectShift paddle shifters provide more control over each drive. The Edge ST comes standard with all-wheel drive, which features selectable traction control, and a specially-tuned sport suspension for superlative balance and handling. Also offered with the 2019 Ford Edge ST is a performance brake package, for which details will likely be illuminated more clearly closer to its summer 2018 launch.

Whether you saw it coming or not, the 2019 Ford Edge ST promises to be an exciting foray into performance utility vehicles by the Blue Oval.
