[PHOTOS] Subaru to Unveil New 2015 WRX STI Rallycross Car, VT15x, in New York
The New York International Auto Show kicks off today at the Javits Center in Manhattan, and although the press schedule denotes that Subaru will only be hosting lunch, the Japanese automaker apparently has more to give us than just cold sandwiches. Subaru reported yesterday that it would be pulling the cover off its new 2015 WRX STI rallycross car at the show today. This rallycross fighter will compete in Red Bull Global Rallycross and X Games Rallycross.
The new rallycross model has been named VT15x and marks the third evolution of Subaru’s STI-based rallycross car in the last four years; the VT15x was built by Vermont SportsCar. The Team Principal, Lance Smith, of Vermont SportsCar does not even call the VT15x an evolution, but a “revolution”: “We made huge strides in durability and competitiveness last season. The VT15x is almost entirely-new technology.”
A world-famous 2.0-liter Boxer engine powers the new 2015 WRX STI rallycross car, putting down a whopping 580 horsepower. This powerhouse engine is mated to a six-speed SADEV sequential gearbox and, because it’s a Subaru, it’s got an all-wheel-drive platform. The example that will be on display wears Bucky Lasek’s latest livery (meaning the badass orange/black/white combo that looks ever so intimidating).
Other notable features for the new VT15x include a rallycross-spec widebody and METHOD Race Wheels. Handling has been improved over the outgoing model via optimization of suspension geometry, weight balance, and aerodynamics. Launch time has also been improved; the rallycross fighter can now hit 60 mph in just 2 seconds.
Smith explained, “The foundation of every great race car is the chassis you start with. Using the 2015 WRX STI, we have seen gains in handling and cornering in both our stage rally and rallycross cars; which is a testament to advancements in design from the factory.”
