2019 Ford Ranger

You’ve asked (and asked, and asked, and asked), and Ford has delivered. The 2019 Ford Ranger mid-size pickup is reporting for duty, and it looks ready for just about whatever plans you’ve dreamt up for it over more than five years of waiting.

The 2019 Ford Ranger will be offered in three trims at the outset: XL, XLT, and Lariat. (Sorry, no Ranger Raptor just yet.) The Ranger will be available in SuperCab or SuperCrew cab configurations; as 2WD or 4WD models; and with Chrome and Sport Appearance Packages and an FX2/FX4 Off-Road Package. Production is set to begin later this year at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant.

“Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of truck fans,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president, Product Development and Purchasing. “The all-new Ranger is designed for today’s midsize truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability, and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends.”

At the outset, the 2019 Ford Ranger looks quite a lot like the global T6 model that’s been around for a while, but given how purposeful it looks, there wasn’t much need to reinvent the wheel. The 2019 Ranger is exactly what it needs to be—somewhere between sporty and strong. For what it’s worth, Ford says that the exterior design, chassis, and powertrain were “developed specifically for North American truck customers.”

The latter is definitely the case with the lone powertrain announced for the time being: Ford’s twin-turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost, which will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. If the use of this powertrain combo in the 2018 Ford Explorer is any indication, this means that the 2019 Ranger will deliver 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque or somewhere just north of it.

“Ranger’s proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost provides a torque target on par with competing V6 engines, but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder,” said Thai-Tang. “When you pair that with its 10-speed transmission, you’ve got one of the most versatile, powerful and efficient powertrains in the segment.”

For both 2WD and 4WD models, the 2019 Ranger is equipped with Dana AdvanTEK independent front and solid rear axles. With the FX2 Off-Road and FX4 Off-Road Package, an electronic-locking rear axle is included for improved traction. FWD models also feature 2-high, 4-high, and 4-low settings.

Because the 2019 Ford Ranger is liable to be scooped up by hungry off-road enthusiasts, it’s being offered with an F4X Off-Road Package that adds all-terrain tires, frame-mounted skid plates, frame-mounted heavy-gauge steel front bash plate, off-road-ready shocks, and Ford’s Terrain Management System. The Terrain Management System, also offered on the F-150 Raptor, provides four driving modes ideal for scenarios including driving on grass, gravel, sand, and snow.

The 2019 Ranger FX4 Off-Road package will also come with Trail Control, which acts as a cruise control for off-roading conditions by taking over accelerating and braking duties at a low, consistent speed on adverse terrains.

Among the available convenience and entertainment tech options for the 2019 Ranger are SYNC 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Ford+Alexa personal assistant functionality, FordPass Connect 4G LTE modem with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, B&O PLAY premium audio system.

Safety First: What cutting-edge safety features are being offered with the new 2018 Ford F-150?

Driver-assist features offered with the 2019 Ford Ranger include Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Reverse Sensing System, and Blind Spot Information System—all standard on XLT and Larait models. Pedestrian Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control are also standard for Lariat.

There’s quite a bit more for Ford to reveal about the Ranger—specifics about body and chassis construction, expected engine output and additional offerings, and pricing, just to name a few. The 2019 Ford Ranger is likely to arrive at dealerships early next year, so expect a slow trickle of additional information over the next several months. Hey, it’s not like you haven’t been waiting for this thing anyway.
