The Toyota Highlander is about to enter the fourth year of its third generation, making it the ideal time for the Japanese automaker to give it a bit of a refresh for the 2017 model year. The new 2017 Highlander will make its official debut at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) next week, but Toyota has already released pictures and specifications of the spacious SUV.

New additions to the Highlander for 2017 include a new Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission, a new 3.5-liter Direct Injection V6 engine, and a Stop and Start Engine System. Horsepower ratings for this new engine have yet to be released, though Toyota promises that the engine will enjoy a boost in hp while increasing mpg ratings. This new engine will also be featured in the 2017 Toyota Sienna when it’s released.

The Highlander 4×2 LE and Hybrid models will still be equipped with the SUV’s current 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. The 4×2 LE will keep its six-speed automatic transmission, while Hybrid models will retain their CVTs.

Outside, the Highlander will receive a redesigned grille, sleeker taillights, and three new exterior color choices (Celestial Silver Metallic, Toasted Walnut Pearl, and Salsa Red Pearl).

The Highlander’s interior also receives a redesign, with a total of five USB ports (up from one), a brown leather interior on the Limited Platinum model, and a choice between second-row captain’s chairs and bench seats in the Limited and Limited Platinum trims. Altogether, the 2017 Highlander will be capable of carrying between seven and eight people.

In addition, Toyota will release an all-new Highlander SE model, which will feature 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, tuned suspension, a dark painted grille, unique black leather-trimmed seats with silver stitching and pattern seat inserts, matching dash and door inserts, and a black front tray.

Also new for 2017 is Toyota’s Safety Sense P package, which is standard on all 2017 Highlander models. This package includes a pre-collision system with forward collision warning and automatic emergency brake, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, pedestrian pre-collision system, and dynamic radar cruise control. Additionally, the Highlander XLE model will receive a standard blind spot monitor, while the Limited Platinum model will have a standard Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, which provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle.

The 2017 Highlander will be on display to the public at NYIAS from March 25th to April 3rd at the Javits Center in Manhattan. The updated SUV will go on sale in the fall of this year.
