The 2016 Toyota Prius

It’s been a long time coming, but last night, at a press event in Las Vegas, Toyota finally revealed the next-gen 2016 Prius to the world—and it’s everything we hoped it would be.

2016 Toyota Prius reveal

In recent years, the Prius had become rather drab when compared to its competitors. Its unique shape was easily recognizable, but it’s doubtful that many people wanted to own a Prius for its looks.

That could all change now, thanks to a dramatic makeover with elements borrowed from the Mirai fuel cell vehicle to help launch the Prius into the future. A floating roof, lowered hood, lowered spoiler, and standard LED headlamps complete the Prius’ transition into the new generation.

For 2016, Toyota has introduced a smaller, lighter hybrid system, which is expected to yield a 10% increase in fuel efficiency. While no numbers have been released, we can assume the 2016 Prius will get around 55 mpg combined—more than any non-plug-in vehicle on the road today.

The Prius has been completely redesigned inside to include a wrap-around dash design, form-hugging seats, and easy-to-use controls. Visibility has also been increased, thanks to the sheer amount of glass around the vehicle.

Safety features include the new Toyota Safety Sense, which offers a pre-collision system, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high-beams, all at an affordable price.
