The Hyundai Tucson has been an important model in the Korean automaker’s lineup since its debut in 2004. Currently in its second generation, a redesigned Tucson was unveiled last month at the Geneva Motor Show. And now, Hyundai has brought the US-spec version to the New York Auto Show to make its debut on North American shores.

The third-generation Tucson comes with a longer wheelbase designed to provide a more flexible and comfortable interior. It rides on 19-inch alloys with a forward-raking wheel arch design and uniquely-designed spokes. The base 2016 Tucson is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which pumps out somewhere in the neighborhood of 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. A second engine—a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder—is also available, and is good for 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The former engine is expected to return 26 mpg combined, while the latter should get around 29 mpg combined.

Both front- and all-wheel-drive options are available, depending on your needs. The AWD system features active cornering control, which is essentially a torque vectoring system that helps reduce understeer. The body of the third-generation crossover is built with 50% high-strength steel, as opposed to 18% in the second-gen, which means smoother turns and a more comfortable ride overall.

Design-wise, the 2016 Tucson comes with a newly-styled hexagonal grille, LED twin-projector headlamps, LED accents, chrome exhaust tips, and a standard rear spoiler. Inside, Hyundai has replaced existing materials with soft-touch ones that give the crossover a more luxurious feel. A leather-wrapped instrument panel is available, and the crossover offers a massive 31 cubic feet of cargo space, which is 5 cubic feet more than that found in the 2015 Tuscon.

Hyundai has added a number of new safety features to the 2016 Tucson, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, cross-traffic alert system, and park assist. Additionally, you’ll find the next-generation BlueLink infotainment system inside the 2016 Tucson, which includes remote start, destination search, and roadside assistance.

The next-generation Tucson is expected to arrive at dealerships this summer, although no word has been given on a starting MSRP yet.
