VW at CES 2016 teaser

The end of 2015 has not been great for VW, but things could be looking up in 2016. There have been rumors swirling around the internet for months that VW could be releasing a modern Microbus in the US (a form of Microbus is already available in Europe). America has been teased with two concepts before, and it looks as if we’ll have to handle one more, but this concept will have an established production plan.

The image at the top of this article is the preview image VW has released in advance of its second appearance at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, along with an announcement that a new concept car would be unveiled. Industry experts are guessing that the concept is a new, probably electric, Microbus. Autocar also has a source that says the concept’s unveiling will be closely followed by a production announcement that could bring a Mexican-built Microbus to the US as soon as 2017.

If the Microbus is electric, it is speculated that it will use technology that is in Audi’s e-tron electric lineup. Going electric would be smart, considering any new diesel offerings would be heavily scrutinized in the wake of Dieselgate.

If the rumors are true, the concept will be unveiled at a keynote speech by the head of Volkswagen’s passenger cars division, Herbert Diess, on January 5th. We certainly hope they’re correct. VW needs something new for everyone to talk about, and the return of a beloved classic model seems like a great start.
