January is looking to be a busy month for automotive enthusiasts. The month starts off with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), and we’re already counting down the days until the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. But one other event on our list is the Russo and Steele vehicle auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The auction will feature dozens of classic and unique vehicles, including the Polar Expedition Tacoma.

This vehicle began life as an ordinary 2010 Toyota Tacoma truck. But it was soon making history by completing the fastest overland journey to the South Pole, manned by Jason De Carteret and Kieron Bradley. The duo managed to cover the 1,114 kilometers (692 miles) in an impressive 39 hours and 54 minutes.

As you might expect, the Polar Edition Tacoma was modified before making this epic journey so that it would be able to withstand the inhospitable climate of the South Pole. Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest place on earth, so the team had to ensure that the Tacoma was up to the challenge before setting off. Modifications were plenty, and included a 330-gallon extended range fuel tank, military-grade steel in place of metal, 44-inch Mickey Thompson Icepack tires, and an insulated cab with roll cage. These are just a few of the modifications made by Arctic Trucks, and all have been left in place for the auction.

The truck cost a grand total of $400,000, but it is being auctioned off with no reserve. If you want to own a piece of automotive history, now’s your chance—just get down to Scottsdale January 14th – 18th and get bidding!
