Class got back in session this past week at Pontiac High School, and the students were greeted by a much more welcoming entranceway thanks to the efforts of 10 classmates who worked with GM Student Corps this summer.

According to GM, 10 Pontiac High School students were brought into the GM Student Corps as paid interns, and they joined other volunteers in the effort of restoring the high school’s entrance to some semblance of glory. The GM Student Corps, which consisted of 128 high school students, 55 GM retirees, and 14 college interns, performed refurb projects at 11 schools and eight parks around the Detroit area.

“From now on these students will see their school and their community in a different light,” said Lew Elbert, a GM retiree who spent his second summer as a Student Corps mentor. “This summer gave them a jumpstart on adulthood, a sense of what’s out there and a lesson on what people can accomplish together.”

According to GM, the corps spread nearly 1,000 yards worth of mulch, planted 700 flowers and trees, and applied 246 gallons of paint and stain. Other projects included an effort to remodel the greenhouse and various areas of Osborn High School, in addition to cleaning and beautifying efforts at the following institutions: Central Collegiate Academy, East Detroit High School, Flint Southwestern Academy, Hamtramck High School, Harper Woods High School, Henry Ford High School, Madison High School, Melvindale High School, River Rouge High School, and Van Dyke Lincoln High School.
