Porsche Cayenne Kicks Off “Dream Car Week” on The Price is Right
If you’re a 12-year-old boy staying home from school because you’re sick, you may have noticed that it’s “Dream Car Week” on The Price is Right. The long-running game show is giving away $500,000 worth of luxury vehicles this week, including a Range Rover Sport SE, a Maserati Quattroporte S Q4, a Tesla Model S, and an Aston Martin V8 Vantage roadster. The promotion kicked off on Monday when former Old Guard infantryman Jacob Caughey totally nailed the Lucky $even game and won himself a new 2015 Porsche Cayenne.

According to Car and Driver, since the show began in 1972, The Price Is Right has given away over 8,000 cars in a little over forty years. Of course, that doesn’t mean that there are 8,000 people driving around in cars they won on a daytime show right now. A lot of people sell the cars or just accept the cash equivalent, since they have to pay federal income taxes on their winnings, along with state sales tax and registration fees. Some of the contestants probably couldn’t even afford the insurance you would have to pay on some of these premium vehicles. (Think about it: when was the last time you asked someone, “Wow, where did you get this sweet Porsche?” only to have them answer, “Uh, Plinko?”)

Plus, these sorts of extravagant prizes tend to upset true Price is Right purists (AKA the nation’s grandmas), who point out that the program used to feature mostly recurring, commonplace items, meaning that contestants who regularly watched the show would have a good chance of knowing their prices. Now the show uses pretty random and often fairly exotic items, making the guessing game more of a crapshoot.
As cool as these cars are, would the average person have any idea what a Tesla costs? The show’s nadir came when they tried to give away a $285,716 Ferrari 458 Spider, which this poor woman had no idea how to price, because it’s not like she spends a lot of time browsing at Ferrari dealerships.
Still, if we managed to win a Porsche Cayenne, we don’t think we would complain about the damage it’s doing to the integrity of the game, nor would we whine about the taxes (even if we had to sell our cars and take out a third and fourth mortgage to cover them).
And now, just because it’s fun, let’s watch this stoner keep bidding $420 over and over.
