The biggest change for the new 718 Cayman might be what’s lurking underneath its hood

Months after showcasing the new 718 Boxtser roadster at the New York Auto Show, Porsche has finally revealed details for its updated 718 Cayman coupe.

Using the stage at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show as its platform, Porsche revealed that just like the new 718 Boxster, the upcoming 718 Cayman has done away with its six-cylinder engines and will be offered instead with a pair of turbo-fours for the 2017 model year.

There will be two versions of the 718 Cayman available in the United States. The entry-level 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman makes use of a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-4 engine that’s rated at 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, while the even more athletic 718 Cayman S will feature a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-4 that’s good for 350 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. So, despite losing two cylinders, the 2017 version of the Cayman will come with significantly more horsepower and torque than last year’s offering.

The suspension on the rear-wheel drive Porsche 718 Cayman has also been finely tuned to provide more lateral grip and improved cornering precision. Improvements come in the form of retuned shock absorbers, as well as firmer springs and sway bars. Porsche is also offering adaptive damping as an option, while also giving consumers the choice between a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Porsche didn’t forget about updating the interior of the 718 Cayman either. The cabin now comes standard with the eight speaker Sound Package Plus audio system, new 918 Spyder design sport steering wheel, and Porsche Communication Management (PCM).

The 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman is scheduled to reach US dealerships in November of 2016. The starting MSRP of the base 718 Cayman is $54,950, while the higher-level 718 Cayman S carries a starting MSRP of $67,350.
