Protect Your Eyes While Driving

March is known as Workplace Eye Wellness Month. While it’s definitely a good idea to take care of your eyes if you have a corporate job indoors, it’s equally important to take care of them if your workplace is transportation-based. Whether you’re driving a ride share vehicle, contractor van, or delivery truck, here are some strategies to implement this spring as the Northern Hemisphere starts to experience more hours of daylight.

Wear sunglasses

UV rays can damage your eyes and result in vision loss including cataracts and macular degeneration. Sunglasses block 100% of UV rays, so make sure to have a couple of spare sunglasses in your vehicle at all times. According to Gary Heiting, OD and contributor with All About Vision, you should opt for close-fitting wraparound styles of sunglasses to provide optimum protection. Even if it’s not sunny outside, if you drive with the windows open, wearing sunglasses will help protect your eyes from flying debris that you encounter on the road.

Tips for driving with sun glare

Use your car’s sun visor(s) to help minimize glare when you’re driving toward the sun. Another helpful tip to protect your eyes and to stay safe on the road is to use lane markings to help guide you.

Take breaks when driving long distances

Eye strain and fatigue are common for those whose jobs involve extensive driving. Take breaks when your eyes start to feel tired. If you’re traveling with a coworker, take turns driving.

Eye exam appointments

Make sure to visit the eye doctor regularly. If you don’t wear contacts or eyeglasses, visiting the eye doctor every other year should suffice. If you do have vision limitations, however, you should schedule your appointments annually.
