Ram Truck brand yesterday announced that it will be the only automaker to adopt the new SAE J2807 towing standards across all pickup truck segments—its ½-ton, ¾-ton, and 1-ton. Other automakers, like Chevy (with the Silverado) and GMC (with the Sierra), have adopted these new standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (hence SAE) for some, but not all, trucks.

Ram, on the other hand, has adopted the standardized towing practices across its complete model lineup: on the Ram 1500, the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty, and the “King of the Hill,” the Ram 3500 Heavy Duty. What’s more—they will all still maintain their max tow ratings. (Don’t believe us? Check out the video at the bottom of this post.)

“Because our customers asked for it, every single 2015 model year pickup truck Ram sells will come with a trailer-tow rating achieved using SAE’s J2807 testing protocols,” reported Reid Bigland, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand. “No other automaker can make that claim.”

The SAE J2807 towing standards detail dynamic and performance criteria for specific vehicles and include several tests while towing, like 0 – 60 mph time.

“Ram Truck has been preparing for integration of the SAE towing standard over the past few years and adding heavier ¾- and 1-ton trucks to the criteria gives it more teeth,” explained Mike Cairns, Director, Ram Truck Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. “For too long, an uneven playing field existed and towing capacities went unchecked. We’re happy to be the only pickup truck manufacturer to align with the SAE J2807 towing standard across our pickup truck lineup.”

We’ve outlined the SAE J2807 towing capacities for all 2015 Ram vehicles below:

  • Ram 1500

o   3.6-liter gasoline Pentastar V6 – 7,600 pounds (unsurpassed)

o   3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 – 9,200 pounds (best-in-class)

o   5.7-liter gasoline HEMI V8 – 10,650 pounds

  • Ram 2500

o   6.4-liter gasoline HEMI V8 – 16,300 pounds

o   6.7-liter Cummins diesel – 17,970 pounds (best-in-class)

  • Ram 3500

o   6.4-liter gasoline HEMI V8 – 16,420 pounds

o   6.7-liter Cummins diesel – 30,000 pounds (best-in-class)

It’s not just SAE J2807 towing standards that Ram dominates in, however. Ram trucks also beat out the competition in fuel economy. That means that Ram has not only the most capable trucks, but also the most efficient.
