Ram is moving on up in pickup rankings

May hasn’t been the best month so far for the Ram brand of pickup trucks. FCA recently recalled 1.25 million Ram truck models built between 2013 and 2016 due to a safety-related error, and the U.S. Government just filed a lawsuit against FCA for allegedly tampering with emission levels during the testing of 104,000 diesel-based vehicles, many of which were Ram 1500 models.

Nevertheless, if April sales are any indication, then Ram might soon have something to celebrate this month. Namely, the Ram pickup truck is on course to overtake the Chevrolet Silverado as the second highest-selling vehicle in the country.

For years, the Chevy Silverado has securely held its spot as not only the second highest-selling pickup on the market, but the second highest-selling vehicle in the U.S. market overall, behind only the Ford F-Series. However, sales for the Chevrolet Silverado have been on a rapid decline in 2017. In fact, Ram outsold the Chevrolet truck model for the past two consecutive sales months.

The Silverado suffered major sales losses last month. Only 40,154 Silverado models were sold in April, a massive 19.7% sales decrease when compared to the 49,990 units sold in April of 2016.

Chevy Silverado sales are on a decline

Meanwhile, sales have only been growing for Ram throughout 2017. Last month, Ram sold 43,421 pickup units, a 7.6% sales increase compared to this time last year.

Year-to-date, Chevrolet is still slightly ahead, with 168,621 Silverado units sold. However, Ram is quickly closing the gap between it and the Silverado, with 162,520 Ram pickups sold so far in 2017.

The sales trajectories for the two brands could not mirror each other any better. While Silverado sales are down 5.8%, Ram sales are up 5.8%.

If Ram stays the course on its current sales trajectory, then it could very well overtake the Silverado as the second highest-selling vehicle in the market. Still, Ram is nowhere near the top fish in the pickup pond. That honor belongs to the Ford F-Series.

So far this year, the F-Series has sold 275,938 units. This accounts for an impressive 7.4% increase in sales compared to 2016, where it remained the best-selling vehicle on American roads.

GM’s other truck models are also on the decline. GMC Sierra sales are down 6.2% so far this year, while the Colorado has suffered a sales decrease of 4.3%.
