The Ram 1500 (pictured above) might be joined by a smaller truck in the Ram truck brand lineup

It looks like the mid-size pickup truck segment might be getting an additional competitor. While we already know Fiat Chrysler is joining the segment through its Jeep brand—thanks to the announcement that Jeep is finally producing a Wrangler-based pickup truck—it’s quite possible that the Ram truck brand might be getting in on the segment, too.

While Mike Manley, the global head of both Jeep and Ram, wouldn’t confirm any plans for a small Ram pickup truck, he heavily hinted that there was an “opportunity” to introduce one in the United States—and across the world.

“I think there’s opportunity there in the US if you look at what’s happened in the mid-size segment here—significant growth last year,” Manley told The Detroit News at the New York International Auto Show. “I think that space is big enough, certainly, to have two offerings there.”

The growth he is referring to is General Motors’ decision to reintroduce mid-size trucks to the GMC and Chevrolet brands, along with Toyota’s decision to redesign its segment-leading Tacoma.

As of right now, Fiat Chrysler has yet to confirm that a small Ram truck will join the Jeep Wrangler pickup truck being developed for future production. There has been some talk, though, about creating a small pickup for the brand’s plan to expand internationally.

“We don’t necessarily today have the right portfolio within Ram to cater to all of those markets,” Manley said. “But we do have a strong brand. Ram brand is known very well in Africa and the Middle East, and also Latin America.”

So it looks like there could possibly be a small Ram pickup truck coming in the future. At the very least, we can dream—right?
