Red Hot Chili Peppers and James Corden Go Topless For Carpool Karaoke
James Corden has made a fair amount of Carpool Karaoke segments in his time as the host of the Late Late Show. Last night’s bit with the Red Hot Chili Peppers has to be the most risque of the lot, however.
CBS really wanted to keep Corden’s momentum going after the Tony Awards, and he was back as his desk in Los Angeles this Monday. Not only was he back with a new show, but he was also back with a new Carpool Karaoke segment featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band is currently promoting a new album that will be released on June 17th. Usually the segment begins with Corden making up a reason that he needed the celebrity in the car, like when he asked Lin-Manuel Miranda for guidance getting around New York City. When Corden started off asking the Red Hot Chili Peppers for guidance, band leaders Anthony Kiedis and Flea immediatley began to argue as to the proper way to take Corden wherever they were going.
The segment was just one laugh-inducing oddity after another. The first song Corden sang with the band was “Can’t Stop,” which Flea then segued into a rousing rendition of “Food, Glorious Food” from the musical Oliver! with James Corden (who of course knew all the words, as a musical theater buff). Kiedis and Flea also sang an unreleased song full of made up words called “Heemi Lheemey” that was created while hiking through the mountains and perhaps with the assistance of other substances, if you catch my drift.
When the car started to sing along to “Give It Away,” Corden stopped appropriately during the opening of the song to ask exactly what Kiedis planned on giving to his mother, father, and daughter. The singer responded that Corden’s mother would get love and affection, and his father would be given a stern talking to. At first, the singer refused to say what he would give to Corden’s daughter, but then he was reminded that it was the Late Late Show and responded that he would “read her a bedtime story.” I suspect that, off camera, Kiedis was reminded that Corden’s daughter Carey is only about 18 months old before he responded.
From there Carpool Karaoke continued to get wackier and wackier. After talking about fighitng at school, Corden pulled the car over in front of a random house to wrestle with Kiedis, who eventually pinned him to the grass. Chad Smith dubbed that portion of the drive Front Lawn Wrestling, but we’ll see if it’s ever repeated. Corden, Flea, and Kiedis also sang a spirited rendition of “The Zephyr Song” topless after a discussion that they were wearing more clothes than they normally do on stage.
While this seems like a lot to be crammed in a 15 minute segment, there are so many other things that happened that I have not even tried to explain. See them for yourself in the video below.
